STEAM BREAD
STEAM BREAD: [Lion Match Products]
Steaming hot, fresh out-of-the-pot, Jeqe is mouth-watering bread that makes for an awesome side dish at any braai!
YOU NEED:
3 cups flour (All-purpose or Bread flour)
½ cup sugar
1/8 cup oil
½ packet yeast (1 teaspoons)
½ tablespoon salt
Enough water that the mixture becomes a soft dough when kneaded
WHAT TO DO:
1. Mix all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl.
2. Knead it very well, until you have a soft dough. Let it rise for up to an hour then knead it down, and let it rise again for another hour.
3. To cook the dough, you will need a clean plastic bag (grocery bags work best – make sure there are no holes in the bag). Put a spoonful of cooking oil in the bag and spread it around (so the dough doesn’t stick to the inside of the bag).
4. Place the risen dough into the bag.
5. Put the bag into a large pot with water in it. If well risen, the bag of dough should float.
6. You can loosely tie the open top of the bag, but don’t seal it. The steam needs to be able to enter into the bag and cook the dough.
7. Bring the water to a boil and put the lid on the pot. Let the steam cook the bread for at least an hour before removing.
8. Slice and eat!
